The ability of many pets to return home through unfamiliar territory had long been a well-known and thought-provoking phenomenon. Homing is perhaps most familiar in pigeons that, no matter where they are released, return to their roots after flights of hundreds and even thousands of kilometers.

A psychic duck has become a German war time hero. The duck began making an uproar in a Freiburg park just before the worst Allied bombing raid in the last days of the war. The bird renewed its alarm every 15 minutes, sending hundreds of people to safety in air raid shelters. During the raid the duck died, but after the war when Freiburg was rebuilt, the grateful citizens erected a monument to commemorate the bird.
